Are You Lost? Use a Map–That Works For Music Too…

August 29, 2011 Leave a comment

Hi there folks, how are you doing?

Some time ago I talked a little about “drawing” music–I mean, translating sounds into images, not necessarily using the old, regular music sheet. At the time we did an excercise of creating a “prescriptive” visual code for the future-wannabe-piece-of-music… o.o (that means thinking about the piece’s behaviour even before a single note coming to life) But today we were able to put it to a good use at our musical project to map an arrangement for a recording section.

What do you do when you have a samba that evolves into a Gregorian chant and then reveals its real salsa nature? (Yes, it’s possible and I’ll come back with it when it’s ready to go. -.-) Well, of course you gotta need a chart of some sort not to get lost. This is what we came up with:

"Turn left, walk another couple miles..."

Now imagine my walls covered with these annotations and you can easily see why my neighbours take us as a secret sect of some sort. lol

Jokes aside I can state it’s really useful to  spend some time planning on how a recording–or arrangement, or anything alike for that matter–is going to be made… Or regret having to make decisions at the hot seat of a recording section with the clock–and money–running out.

See ya, have an awesome week!

More On Percussion and More On Arab Music

Hi there folks, how are you doing? A little late again but my Sunday was a tough nut to crack, I must tell you. -.-

Here I am messing around with curious percussion instruments again… And flirting with arab music (which I absoulutely love) once more. :P But actually this one isn’t a real musical instrument… It’s a dancing instrument–if I can put it that way… lol

Talking ’bout the Zill! (or Sagat, or Snuj as some call it here in Brazil I’m not sure why) The Zill consists of a pair of finger cymbals used in belly dance performances. Here’s a pic:

Tiny finger cymbals... The Zill.

Despite being small if well-crafted they can produce both sparky rhythmic sounds and a nice, clear, long-lasting tune–and in an impressive loudness level too. Here you can take a listen to a sample recording I did when I had the opportunity to place my hands over such beauties. :P

That’s it for now, have an awesome week! :)

Tails of the Formerly-Mentioned Coin… :P

Hi there, how are you all doing? I’m freaking tired, thanks for asking. -.- lol

Now I’m here to share the other side of that coin–the classical one. Unfortunately our recording section is yet to be available at our school’s site so I must upload a MIDI/SoundFont pre-production version.

Here you go with the sheet and the audio. I hope you enjoy that!

Have an awesome week and good night! (gotta get some sleep… :P)

Ye Old Wild West…

Hi there, how are you all doing?

Last week I left a little clue on what to expect next while I was on a vacation trip… But that was a loosen one, I must confess. lol The fact is I was working into a two-side-coin of a theme, an it relates to Goblin’s “Profondo Rosso” only by the somewhat tense mood and the Italian Western movies influence… :P

I’ll share now the heads of that coin, the “popular” point of view of the theme… Just because it was written earlier. Of course most of you won’t get the lyrics–since this one is in Portuguese–but I can say it has something to do with fighting internal demons… Or windmills, just like Don Quixote from where I’ve borrowed the song’s name.

I hope you enjoy it for now, next week we’ll hear the “classic” side of that coin… And feel free to ask anything more specific on the lyrics if you’re curios about it.

Fatigado dos 200 dias de batalha,
sem baixar a vista, já contemplo o fim da estrada.
Não sinto medo
nem tampouco desespero.
Desembainho ainda outra vez a espada e faço o que tem de ser feito.

Golpe após golpe o cristal se despedaça;

Vacation! But I’ll be right back. -.-

Hi there, how are you doing?

As you can see I missed my last post because I went into a vacation trip… And due to some tripping trucks and buses (including mine) on the road I just tripped over my schedule as well–more than I could afford, I must say. -.-

But I’ll be right back on next Sunday-through-Monday as always… And here’s a clue on what to expect next (well, kinda o.o):

See ya soon!
