Hi there, how have you been?

Coincidentaly in a week I was digging my ol’ Bomberman II (NES) cart to make some scans I stumbled on this fortunate surprise: its soundtrack is now neatly organized at Soundcloud. :)

June Chikuma–the awesome composer behind the work–was kind enough to upload a lot of videogame stuff at her profile there and there are plenty of lessons to be taken for free. My favorite one is the aforementioned Bomberman II OST because in this work she managed to expand former ideas to unconceivable depths at the time and turned something until then only catchy into some really classic pieces.

Without further ado, enjoy her generosity and take a listen yourself. I’m sure you’re gonna enjoy it. :)

Puzzle Soundtracks: A Master Class

Hi there, how have you all been?

Scoring music for puzzle games is one of the trickiest tasks a composer can be up to. Music (and sound effects for that matter) in those cases can fail miserably in so many ways that succeeding can be considered an achievement for itself–and with “succeeding” I mean simply not to be switched off by the player. You can be annoying, you can get in the way of the player’s concentration, you can choose the wrong pace… Failure is just around the corner.

Well,  a parcel just arrived from Japan and aside ferociously eating my time it offered me a case study on puzzle game music. :P Dr. Mario (NES) is solid as a rock both gameplay and music wise.

Several jewels of wisdom are there for those who dig deeper: upbeat themes that keep players on their toes while being amusing and highly hummable; some computer noise interludes add a slight sci-fi feel without ever dropping the beat; skipping rhythm styles are “deviated” towards a common overall identity; completely diverse main themes to choose from before start playing… And so much more.

Give it a listen–or even better, play the game if you get the chance to–and you’ll feel it for yourself. :)

Hi there, how have you all been?

Last week while reading this article in Paste‘s website I got in touch with a cute, interesting indie videogame: Castles in the Sky, by The Tall Trees. The premise–gameplay wise–is simple: exploring the environment by jumping around. But there’s something more to it; something deeper.

Castles in the Sky somehow manages to evoke childhood memories… or maybe more; I would say “mindsets”. Of course, not everyone’s childhood memories are equal. But those guys nailed it by approaching the player in a more subconscious level, reaching an abstract yet palpable feeling anyone can relate to.

And music here (by Jack de Quidt) ultimately makes it greater than the sum of its parts. By supporting the watercolor palette cohesively with slightly melancholic piano-based themes it helps drowning you in your own nostalgia, whatever it may be about.

Check the trailer out and if you’re feeling curious/generous you may lend those guys a hand. It would be worthy for its soundtrack alone–which comes standalone in the pack–but $1.50 is a steal anyway. :)

An Involuntary Musical Xmas Gift. :)

Hi there, how have you been?

A kind friend has sent me a digital game for a Xmas gift–one that was sitting at my wishlist at Steam for some time now… :P Well, I must thank him twice because beside being an awesome game per se it has a terrific soundtrack by the magnificent Michiru Yamane.

Take a snack, marry Xmas for us all! ;)

Hi there, how have you been?

Well, this weekend I took part of a hackathon (a coding marathon, in my case to make a game) for the first time in my life and I must say it was a terrific experience. Needing to be creative with the clock ticking above your head isn’t that easy for sure, but I’m glad to say we managed to grab a honorable 2nd place! :) Of course, I can’t code that much… -.- But I can make music, so I want to humbly share my work there.

Gotta thank so many influential space-themed soundtracks, from 2001 (Kubrick‘s movie) to these days’ Super Mario Galaxy (Wii)… With a special mention to mr Nathan McCree and his astounding OST for Soul Star (SEGA CD game). :)

Zero Gravity

A Tough Variation For An Almost Exhausted Theme. :P

Hi there, how have you been?

This week I finally got back to my work in the indie videogame caled “HIVE” and we needed another variation of our very first soundtrack theme. Since I’ve already done a bunch of them this one has proven to be a tough one to figure out… :P Anyway it’s finished and hopefully it gets the job done. :)

The trick here was to shift the original time signature from 3/4 to 4/4… Turning a waltz into a ragtime. lol
